PY ON YOUR SIDE

it's just me.

I took a ride down to the Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles this evening (7/6/09) to check out the Michael Jackson pre-memorial activities. It was quite amazing. There was a line of over 1000 people waiting to sign one of the three Signature Billboards. There were two different slideshows with a set of photos that spanned his career, and there was the beautiful memorial photo. Just a vast amount of media and camera crews, satelittes. I noticed that through all this, it was very quiet. I took the photo set below. If you view the larger Signature Bulletin you can zoom in and see the different comments that people wrote. It was very moving to read them. I'm so happy I made the trip down there. It meant the world to me. I will really miss Michael. :)

Here are a couple shots of the "This Is It" signature wall that was in downtown LA last week. I had an opportunity to sign it. I took these with my cell phone and when I drove down the next day with my good camera the wall had already been taken down.

I'm so glad you got to go and experience his fans reactions! And I'm so glad that Michael got a few days of the kind of respect he deserved before the controversies took over the media again. I've loved Michael Jackson for so long and when he died I had this urge to get in my car and drive to LA to be a part of things (even though I live in Kentucky). I didn't end up doing that, but I did watch it all on tv, and though I've heard about his death constantly in the media and when talking to people, been listening to him almost constantly for several weeks now, and can't seem to stop thinking about his death...I still can't believe he's actually gone. It's almost impossible for me to fathom the impact he's had on our culture, not just because of his great music, but because of the liminality that both allowed him to be accepted and ridiculed.
